The town of Chicago was originally incorporated in 1837 and had a population of just 4,170 residents. The town of Chicago was originally incorporated in 1837 and had a population of just 4,170 residents. Chicago was known for its transportation hub with the 100-mile Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad.
